Carrageenan is secured from red seaweed and is often used for the purpose of thickening low-fat and non-fat food products. It is also used for stabilizing beverages which might otherwise be separated such as chocolate milk. The extract is also added to chicken and deli meats as a binder. This is a natural food ingredient which can be converted to what is known as poligeenan. How Is It Processed?

This is processed in one of the two methods mentioned below.

Refined: In this process, the raw material is prepared in the alkaline solution. Thereafter the solid part is filtered out. The solution that remains contains the red seaweed extract and it is then concentrated and removed from the solution to be dried.

Semi-Refined: In this process, the raw material is prepared in the alkaline solution which has potassium hydroxide. This prevents it from getting dissolved in the solution. Thus, when the algae are removed cellulose and carrageenan are left which is then grounded to form a powder.

Its Uses

Poligeenan was created in 1960’s. During this time, doctors recommended this ingredient for the treatment of peptic ulcer. However, the concentration required for its effectiveness was unpleasant and thick to be consumed. This is the reason it was degraded so that it could be easier to take.
